Conscious travel

Our footprint & ethics while traveling

When we live under constant pressure, our world tends to shrink. We start making choices just to get through the day, often forgetting the impact those choices have on the earth. Our retreats are designed to help you pause and reconnect. We’ve found that when people feel “at home” in their own bodies, they naturally start to care more for the home we all share.

To ensure our journeys are as responsible as they are restorative, we strive to adhere to the VVKR Sustainability Compass. We use this framework to guide our decision-making, ensuring that every retreat respects the environment, supports local communities, and maintains the highest ethical standards.

1. The Peaceful Alchemist journey is part of the practice

We encourage you to see your travel time as the beginning of your retreat rather than just a means to an end. We prioritize transport methods in the following order:

  • By Rail: Whenever possible, we strongly advise taking the train. It is the gentlest way to reach our European destinations and allows for a meditative start to your trip.
  • By Car: If the train isn’t an option, we recommend carpooling. We are happy to connect you with fellow travelers to share the journey, reducing both emissions and costs.
  • By Air: For retreats on other continents where flying is necessary, we advise booking direct flights and flying Economy Class to keep the carbon footprint per person as low as possible.
  • Offsetting: To leave the land better than we found it, we donate a portion of every booking to Trees for All (one tree per attendee) or a local ecosystem project (€ 5 euro per attendee) at our destination to help capture and support biodiversity.

2. Presence as sustainability: digital detox

True sustainability involves being mentally present. We operate a Digital-First policy to eliminate paper waste, but we also offer a way to unplug entirely.

The Choice: We invite you to try a “Digital Detox.” If you wish to go phoneless, let us know when you book. We will provide a recycled, printed version of your Guidebook and timetable. By putting our screens away, we observe local culture and nature with more respect, ensuring we don’t treat these sacred spaces as a mere “backdrop” for social media.

3. Treading softly: local wisdom & ethics

We believe in the importance of connecting with the local rhythm and energy, staying in historically rich areas and nature reserves where we can learn from the land.

  • No Plastic: Please leave the plastic bottles at home. We will provide a high-quality reusable water bottle for you upon arrival. Using filtered local water is a small act that keeps hundreds of plastic bottles out of local landfills.
  • Cultural Respect: We provide a “Local Guide” for every destination. Understanding traditions helps us leave a minimal imprint and ensures we are welcomed as friends, not just visitors.
  • Ethics First: We strictly follow the Defence for Children guidelines. We do not visit orphanages or institutions, ensuring our presence never exploits the vulnerable.

4. A conscious footprint

We believe that “small” is the only way to stay truly sustainable.

  • Small Scale: We limit our retreats to a maximum of 15 guests to minimize the pressure on local infrastructure.
  • Local menu: We prioritize vegan and plant-based menus to reduce our environmental impact and work exclusively with local partners who provide fair labor and local products.
